About Gradient Books

Gradient Books is a small publishing project built around a simple idea: some books are worth the extra work of building a bridge to them.

Sometimes the gap between a reader and a book is linguistic — a great novel written in a language you don't yet read. Our Progressive Translations series closes that gap gradually: each book begins mostly in English and increases the proportion of the original language chapter by chapter, so that by the end you're reading the real thing, not a translation of it.

Sometimes the gap is simply availability. A text can be historically important, still read and cited in its country of origin, and yet have never been rendered into English at all. Our First English Editions series exists to close that gap — bringing overlooked but genuinely significant works to English readers, often for the first time.

Two different kinds of bridges, one publisher: we make it a little easier to reach the books that would otherwise stay out of reach.
